Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Hue UMP) is a national university of Vietnam on health sciences. Among top 3 of the largest Medical Universities in Vietnam, Hue UMP is responsible for training Medicine and Health Sciences for Central region and Highlands with the catchment area’s population of 25 million inhabitants. As the Rector of this University since 2009, I am very proud of its rapid development and promising future.
Found in March, 1957, Hue UMP has progressively moved to the forefront of Health Sciences Education in Vietnam. It provides medical training to an increasingly larger number of students as an inter- and multi- disciplinary university. Currently, the university provides 23 undergraduate training programs; 89 graduate training programs and 4 international programs with approximately 2,000 new students per year. Hue University Hospital (HUH)-the practical training site of Hue UMP- was established in 2002 and ranked as a first-class hospital with 600 beds. HUH is the leading center for specialized healthcare in Thua Thien Hue province and the Central Vietnam. It also shoulders the responsibilities of clinical training, scientific research and outreach programs.
For the future, Hue UMP focuses on determining optimal size and scope of training and research complexity associated with multiple external partnerships & campuses; aligning education and research program structure based on areas of research strength, health issues in the region and alignment with national priorities; developing stronger targets and ambitious plans to optimise opportunities with Translational Research Institute / Center of Excellence in Education, Research and Treatment. Our purpose is to be a leading and unique Institution of Education, Research and Treatment to improve the health situation of people living in Central region and Highlands of Vietnam by providing qualified medical education and practice, research and community services.

USAID in Vietnam currently manages comprehensive portfolios in economic growth and governance, civil society, higher education, health (including HIV/AIDS and Emerging Pandemic Threats), environment and climate change, biodiversity/countering wildlife trafficking, support to persons with disabilities and other vulnerable populations and disaster assistance.
The Partnership for Health Advancement in Vietnam (HAIVN) is a collaboration between Harvard Medical School (HMS) and two HMS-affiliated teaching hospitals, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH). Our staff includes experts in clinical medicine, medical education, health systems, healthcare quality improvement, monitoring and evaluation, and implementation research.
HAIVN supports Vietnam’s health system through a comprehensive approach to building healthcare worker capacity. This includes:
(1) Strengthening medical education through curriculum innovation and faculty development
(2) Providing training, mentoring, and coaching in HIV and strengthening systems and capacity for technical assistance in the country
(3) Supporting the Vietnam Ministry of Health to develop policies and regulations that support quality medical education and medical care such as systems of accreditation and licensing.
HAIVN staffs operate in more than 20 provinces in Vietnam with project offices in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Boston.
The Improving Access, Curriculum and Teaching in Medical Education and Emerging Diseases (IMPACT-MED) Alliance is a public-private partnership bringing together a diverse group of university, public and private sector partners. USAID works with the Alliance to build a strong and effective health workforce in Vietnam able to respond to 21st century priorities and to contribute to the health resilience of the country, respond to health threats, and improve antibiotic use. IMPACT-MED works with five medical universities, and policymakers to improve and innovate undergraduate medical education by providing technical assistance to comprehensively reform the six-year training program for general medical doctors. In addition, it supports innovative programs to improve access and educational outcomes for socially and economically disadvantaged medical students.
