Darrell G. Kirch, MD

President and CEO

Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)

Biography:

 

Dr. Darrell G. Kirch is president and CEO of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), which represents the nation's medical schools, teaching hospitals, and academic societies.

A distinguished physician, educator, and medical scientist, Dr. Kirch speaks and publishes widely on the need for transformation in the nation’s health care system and how academic medicine can lead change across medical education, biomedical research, and patient care. He is an ardent champion for the well-being of the nation’s health professions workforce and interprofessional education, serving as co-chair of the National Academy of Medicine Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being and Resilience and as a founding member of the Interprofessional Education Collaborative. Dr. Kirch is also a member of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Special Medical Advisory Group and the Board of Regents of the American College of Psychiatrists and a past member of the American Council on Education Board of Directors. In 2007, Dr. Kirch was elected to the National Academy of Medicine (formerly the Institute of Medicine). 

Before becoming AAMC president in 2006, Dr. Kirch served as the dean and academic health system leader of two institutions: Medical College of Georgia and Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. He has co-chaired the Liaison Committee on Medical Education — the accrediting body for U.S. medical schools — and chaired the AAMC Council of Deans. 

A psychiatrist and clinical neuroscientist by training, Dr. Kirch began his career at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), becoming the acting scientific director in 1993. His work at NIMH was recognized when he received the Outstanding Service Medal of the United States Public Health Service. A native of Denver, Dr. Kirch earned his BA and MD degrees from the University of Colorado.

 

Susan Day, MD

Senior Vice President, Medical Affairs, ACGME International, Chicago, IL, USA

Biography:

After a thirty-year career centered on the clinical practice of pediatric ophthalmology and medical education, Dr. Day joined the ACGME International team where she serves as Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs.  
Her interest in graduate medical education includes 20 years as Program Director and 5 years as her institution's Designated Institutional Official with oversight of all residency programs.  Leadership positions have included serving as the Chair of the Ophthalmology Review Committee, Chair of the ACGME Board, as well as President of the national membership, academic, and honor societies for her specialty.  
Her focus is on the development of medical education systems which assure competence of its graduates to practice independently upon completion of training.  Internationally this focus has been applied in multiple places, including Singapore, Lebanon, and Haiti, reflecting the need to honor both rigor of educational content and inherent flexibility as required by country needs, resources, and cultures. 

 

Ducksun Ahn

Professor, MD, FRCSC, MA (Lit.), MA (Bioethics), P.g.Dip (MEd.)

College of Medicine Korea University

Biography:

Ducksun Ahn graduated from Korea University Medical College in 1978 and received clinical training in Plastic Surgery at the University of Toronto. Upon his return to Korea, he created the Medical Education Department at Korea University Medical College. He also holds a Master’s degree in bioethics (Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium). 
As a former ECFMG fellow for international medical education at the University of California in Los Angeles., his main interest is in health professional education and regulation. He was the president of the Korean Society of Medical Education, the Association for Medical Education in the Western Pacific Region, and the Korean Institute of Medical Education and Evaluation (accrediting body of Korea). 
Currently he is the vice-president of the World Federation for Medical Education, AMEE Ambassador, member of AMEE ASPIRE for student engagement panel, professor at the Department of Medical Humanities of Korea University Medical College, and professor at the Department of Plastic Surgery of Korea University Medical Center. He has been awarded for excellence in teaching, research and innovation by Korea University, the Korean Society of Medical Education, and the Korean Association of Medical Colleges.
